Sights to see in Chora

• The The Wall with battlements, of the castle built in the 13th century by Jeremiah Gyzis for the protection of Amorgos. At its entrance, you will find the chapel of Agios Georgios. The view from the top of the fortress is rare.
• The Tower of Gavras, a 16th century building of Venetian architecture, is located at the centre of Hora. Today it is used as a museum, where artifacts from excavations on Amorgos are exhibited. You can see ancient sculptures and inscriptions.
• The Byzantine Churches. Worth seeing among them are Kera-Leoussis, with the wonderful image of the Virgin Mary, Agio Thalalaio, Agios Thomas, the Stavros, the Metropole, the Agious Pantes and the double -named Church of Metamorfosis – Agiou Stefanou.
• The first High School founded in Greece after the Revolution in 1821. As stated on the inscription «in 1829 the expenses were covered by the Holy Monastery of Hozoviotissa”.
• The Kato lakkos, a medieval cistern that was used to irrigate Hora.
• The ruins of the Hellenistic tower, in the northern part of Hora, on Terlaki.
• Agios Georgios Valsamitis, is found in the southern part of Hora. A church with a dimness roof and spring from which holy water gushed and which functioned as a famous Hydromanteion until the last century.
• The ruins of the Venetian tower, near the Church Agios Georgios.
• The Byzantine Monastery of Hozoviotissa is the gem and hallmark of Amorgos which you must most certainly visit. It is located to the east of Hora, on a rock 300 metres above the sea. According to tradition, the founding of the monastery is due to a miracle.
