Αξιοθέατα Κάτω Μεριάς

• The Tower of Agia Triada (Ancient Arkesini): The tower of Agia Triada is the greatest monument of Kato Meria and is located in Arkesini, 400 metres to the right of the road towards the village of Kolofana. Made from huge boulders, the work of the fourth century BC, it stands in this quiet area and is not visible from the sea. It has small skylights, water tanks and a hydraulic sewer system. From the investigations of the archaeologist, Lila Maragos, it seems that the region constituted the backbone of the city-state of ancient Arkesini and served to protect the inhabitants from raids.
• The Cycladic Acropolis Arkesini: It is situated on the hill Kastela , east of Mount Korakas, and has a view of the whole plain of Arkesini. Newer buildings have been built by Cycladic residents (stables, houses, etc.), thus confirming the widespread occupancy of Amorgos since the Bronze Age.
• Pyrgi: A Cycladic location where you can also notice the foundations of a square tower from the classic Hellenistic years.
• Kastri: North of the village Vroutsi, on the hill by the sea that looks like the Acropolis of Athens, you will find the ancient Castle of Arkesini and the church of Panagia Kaotrianis who is celebrated on the 8th of September. This area was inhabited since prehistoric times. On the Castle there is evidence of the Middle Cycladic settlement as well as finds from historical times such as inscriptions, sculptures, ceramics, etc, which cover a long period from the Geometric to the Roman period. Among the remains, ancient fortifications of Venetian fortifications of the medieval era have been recovered. The common belief is that the Kastri (castle) was eventually abandoned because of the pirates during the Venetian period. You can reach the castle via a road from the village of Vroutsi hiking for about 45 minutes.
