at Halara, Amorgos
HALARA
A very beautiful beach located at the south of the island, extends for about 200 mts. and is covered by sand and pebbles. You can access it by a path that only few people know from the river of Aigiali and hike for one and half hrs. It is a solitary beach for the daring ones who are always rewarded when they have discovered it. It is also the right place for fishgun. You can see the "Petrified Pirate" here about whom the legend says that "Many years ago Pirates from the East set out to loot Amorgos and the wealthy Monastery of Panagia of Hozoviotissa. As they were sailing the southern coast of the island they spotted Kroukelo cape and the attractive beach of Halara and decided to moor and rest. Panagia (Virgin Mary) who protects the whole island petrified their captain who has remained since then as a rock. The rest of the pirates scared as they were, they abandoned their two ships which drifted by the waves finally stopped below the Monastery. Panagia petrified these two as well. They are the iles of Megalo and Mikro Viokastro right next to Ag. Anna and the Monastery respectively".
